Arghh, if you have children you know injuries and illnesses often come with the territory, and of course when you travel that doesn't miraculously disappear. Well this trip was no different but gee, we seemed to get a lot this time so it seemed to warrant its own blog. 🚑
I knew we were going to be in for a ride when Miss C started coughing in the middle of the FIRST night. As soon as the air temperature really dropped she started. Unfortunately, all 3 of our children have asthma but the doctors are trialing Miss C off of a prevention inhaler this winter as her asthma is considered mild. She has been managing well but the cold air got to her this trip, so she went back on medication to get it under control (lucky we thought ahead and took it with us - mum ESP)!
That brings us to the first morning, while having breakfast things went from bad to worse with Miss A having a major incident. Now, please be nice and don't judge, as we do have strict rules about fires, and children are always supervised, but accidents do happen. The fire wasn't burning, it only had a few coals and the remaining ash from the night before, but as you know, it can still be very hot. Miss A was sitting on her chair and went to get up and accidentally tripped and put her hands down to protect her fall, but, they landed in the ash. We are very fortunate we have an extremely good first aid kit on board the van (future blog) and as well as the initial cold running water we were able to put burn gel, a non stick pad and a bandage on. We were very lucky it was not any worse.
Pictures below of first instance to end of trip.
A few days later it was Master J's turn for an injury. He was playing with our dog, and our friends two dogs and one of them got so close and stepped on his foot, causing a small deep cut. So after some Savlon Cream and a band-aid he returned to his games. He was actually more worried about the band-aid than the actual cut (go figure)!
Later that same day Miss C got a mosquito bite on her back.
"So what" I hear you say!
Well, I can understand your thinking but our little darling is allergic to the damn things and comes out in welts. The picture here is only the beginning of it and that was after a dose of Zyrtec (antihistamine). We had to give it to her for 3 days before it started to reduce! This was actually a minor one compared to some she has had in the past.
Still not even half way through the trip yet and the injuries are piling up, and because we spent a lot of time on the coast and playing in sand dunes, of course every child ended up with sand in their eyes and/or mouth at some point or another and a few eye washes may have occurred.
Poor Miss C seemed to cop the brunt of most of the injuries this trip which is actually very unusual as normally Miss A is our accident prone child. Besides the cough and mosquito bite she managed to get smoke in her eye which required eye drops, her sister jammed her thumb in the door of the van, she shut her own finger in a cupboard door and she cut her foot on a rock whilst exploring on one of the many beaches we visited. Poor love just couldn't catch a break!
Throughout the rest of the trip there were also numerous minor cuts, grazes and bruises, most of which I still have no explanation for, just kids being kids, but at least they had fun and got outdoors, and I'm sure next trip will be no different! Now to restock the First Aid Kit!
